ROASTER'S NOTES:

This offering will be familiar to long-time Batdorf coffee fans, featuring the Bourbon SL-28, SL-34, and Ruiru-11 varieties that have been prominent in Kenya for decades.

The Bourbon cultivar types SL28 and SL34 were originally identified in the 1930’s by Scott Labs as having more disease resistance. Yields are not great, but cup quality is outstanding. SL28 tends to be much fruitier in character while the SL34 tends to be more balanced with a heavier body and sweetness.

Ruiru 11 is a high yielding dwarf hybrid that has disease and pest resistance. The name Ruiru refers to a field laboratory that created the hybrid in response to coffee berry disease (CBD) that had a profound negative impact on yields in Kenya in the late 1960s.

PRODUCTION NOTES:

The Thirikwa Cooperative Society consists of 1553 small holder producers, 674 of whom are women. They are located in the Kirinyaga district on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, approximately 130 kilometers from Nairobi. Gakuyuini is the name of the mill that processes the cherry used to produce this lot.

Careful cherry selection during harvest, and further selection at the mill level, ensure that only the pinnacle of quality is found in this lot. AB refers to the bean size, in this case AB being smaller than AA at screen sizes of 15-18. The size of the bean does not correlate directly with overall cup quality. The coffee is fully washed and dried on elevated beds.

CUP CHARACTERISTICS:

In the cup, this coffee is tropical and lush. Flavors of currant and coconut are present. It has a superbly balanced acidity with crisp tomato and stone-fruit nuance.

RECOMMENDED BREW METHODS:

ROASTED TO ORDER:

When you order online, your coffee is roasted the next morning (Monday-Thursday) by our artisan roasters in Olympia, WA and is packaged and shipped out to you that afternoon.

In just a few days your coffee arrives on your doorstep, ready to be brewed into the best cup of coffee possible.

OUR PROMISE:

When we find an exceptional coffee we buy it. Then the unroasted beans travel by land and by sea to the USA where our artisan roasters develop a custom roast profile for the coffee that best highlights its unique qualities.

We pay farmers fairly and build relationships that last decades. More than 30 years of experience means we have an abundance of relationships with coffee producers that grant us access to the best coffee beans in the world.
