French roast beans are well into the “second crack”. The beans will have a dark brown color and a shiny surface from thier oils.
Late in the 19th Century, after coffee became popular in Europe, each country put its own stamp on the beans by roasting to their people’s preference.
The telling characteristic of the coffee is the degree of roast applied to the beans. It is not necessarily about how much heat you have, but more importantly, it is how you apply it.
We, at Batdorf, have created a French Roast that honors the traditional French flavors and still captures a sweet, chocolate note.
We find that high grown, and dense coffees from the Americas tend to be our best performing coffees for this roasting expression. The green coffees' density allows it to absorb more heat and undergo caramelization of sugars without suffering from roast defects such as “scorching” or “tipping”.
However you choose to brew up our French Roast, you will be satisfied with the chocolate and toasty flavors mixed with syrupy, sugary, sweetness that lingers on your palate.
Dark roast coffees taste excellent when brewed in a French press because it brings out the smoky flavors and its full body. If you want to capture a cleaner cup and experience more of the subtler flavors you would otherwise miss, try using an AeroPress or Clever Coffee Dripper.
When you order online, your coffee is roasted the next morning (Monday-Thursday) by our artisan roasters in Olympia, WA and is packaged and shipped out to you that afternoon.
When we find an exceptional coffee we buy it. Then the unroasted beans travel by land and by sea to the USA where our artisan roasters develop a custom roast profile for the coffee that best highlights its unique qualities.
We pay farmers fairly and build relationships that last decades. More than 30 years of experience means we have an abundance of relationships with coffee producers that grant us access to the best coffee beans in the world.
